I asked Simon Walton if RACEMETRICS could price a race, he said no, within a couple of days he’d got it to do just that, accurately too. The off course firms, no doubt still not totally impervious to some sharp money finding its way into them appear to have cottoned on to the threat. They have already have restricting bets as a cushion but if Glorious Goodwood is anything to go by the SP’s are another, market leaders were being returned way below the on-course prices, so much so that pro-punter Alan Potts pointed out to me that even the Tote returns were bigger than SP in some instances, pretty much unheard of.

Of course, the sharp money comes racing because they know that a fair percentage of racecourse bookmakers pride themselves on not refusing bets. The trouble is for the on-course layers is that now the sharp money finds it increasingly difficult to access the on-line and shop business they are having to have it on course.

When Stephen Little was in his pomp it’s pretty certain that touches were lined up specifically for course he bet at because the punters knew they could get on, I think a charity race stick-on was the final straw for the brave man in musquash.

With the number of strong books betting on-course these days, even at small meetings, pickings can be rich for the shrewds. ‘How do they know?’ is the age old cry. The on-course layers are getting it from all angles, the long-standing judges, the guys with AI and those that know something that missed the break on its last three runs might be worth a grand today.

It’s increasingly a game for the bravest.
