CYANIDE PILLS
‘SINGLED OUT’
(Damaged Goods)
What a fantastic feel-good collection of tunes harvested from the complete output of Leeds based Cyanide Pills singles including all sides plus a couple of forthcoming contributions. The Cyanide Pills are a power pop punk outfit with tunes as catchy as bubble-gum stuck to your dap in the summer of ’76. It’s all big bright tunes, sing-a-long choruses, jangly guitars and just a feel good vibe even when the songs are about unrequited love, there’s velocity and ferocity too ‘Black Lightning’ powers along with some rapidity, there’s also dark humour a plenty throughout this album, ‘Lock It Up’ is a reggae influenced banger, ‘Suicide Bomber’ isn’t a dark tune, it’s about falling in love with one, while ‘My Baby’s Become A Right Wing Extremist’ is another ode to copping off with a wrong ‘un, it’s all great fun, every one of these singles is a gem. The Cyanide Pills are my new favourite band, what’s better than a bunch of tunes you sing along to the first time you hear it without even knowing the words? Nothing that’s what. Available as double album coloured vinyl or CD.

THE HEAVENLY BODES
‘GREEN HILLS’
(Fuzz Club)
This is the debut album by this Cornish band drenched with the ambiance of their deep south heritage but with a soul in lysergic acid and 60’s psych which in turn was suckled on rock n roll, all in the mix. This was recorded on a reel to reel in a mate’s living room in between trips to the sea, and yes it is that salty. There’s various tangs to this album ‘Faux Pillars’ is a dreamy organ driven swirl that fans of dropping a tab and kicking back would have on repeat while ‘De Groene Heuvels’ which is featured on an official video sounds is my idea of what The Cramps might have sounded like had they turned left to beach instead of right to the graveyard for their fun. Concluding track ‘Heavenly Bode’ kicks off with a jaunty bass line, gets confused, veers into temporary bliss, falls in a cacophony then emerges blinking into the light with a new lease of life though the jaunty is banished by fuzz, yes that one properly kicked in. Tremendous stuff in a low-fi, blitzed and blissed fuzzy sort of way. In limited edition Green Vinyl if you are quick.

THE BARONI BLOW-UP – FEAT. SHY BUT FLYY
‘I WANNA/FREE'
(Jungle)
Spoiler alert, this limited edition blue vinyl single is an absolute banger, described as Hillbilly Moon Explosion’s slap bass player Oliver Baroni’s side project no surprise then that bass is to the fore on both sides. ‘I Wanna’ is a Hot Boogie Chillun cover, it’s relentless rock (n roll) pummelled along by that double bass and Tuck Nelson’s solid drumming, Oliver has picked an A-team for this single, not least Mad Sin’s Andy Kandil who hits all the right notes on guitar soaring echo laden riffs. Vocalist Shy But Flyy rides the rolling rocking wave with some spirited vocals, this sounds on vinyl like a stadium anthem. Flip the disc over for ‘Shy’ a Shy Buy Flyy original and that double bass, ah man what a sound, a more rootsy offering than the top side which bounces along with the bass with Andy Kandil once again playing the right riffs at the right time accentuating the atmosphere, a fantastic twin spin, the best single I’ve heard this year.
