                                                                 The Great Escape.

I absolutely love going racing, I have done since the first time I set foot on a racecourse, Cheltenham Mackeson Gold Cup Day 1983. Since then, I’ve been racing all over the UK  around the world, Ireland, Singapore, Belgium, India, Thailand, Canada and Australia and loved every minute of them too. It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, racecourses appear to attract the same type of people, those that grasp life with both hands, the exuberant, the eccentric, the optimists, the sportsmen and a whole host of characters in between, you feel lucky to be a part of it.

There is always a danger that when you have been lucky enough to enjoy a working life going racing as I have, you’ll become blasé to it. Not me, quite the opposite, my recent hiatus due to minor digital incapacity and today thanks to car trouble just reinforces my realisation of how lucky I am and racing people are to have the escape from reality that we do.

Going racing has always been that escape for me, the racecourse blessed with its unique inhabitants and excitement out on the turf has always allowed me to literally forget everything for that afternoon. It’s an outdoor sanctuary where a mind knotted and fraught can become peaceful and untroubled as the outside world is banished, the great triviality to the rescue. just for the afternoon. It’s a metaphorical situation where once you are on course you can shut the door to everything that’s going on outside, lean your back against it and puff out a sigh of relief.

How lucky we are.
