Justice Payments? There’s the door.
The Derby debacle is already yesterday’s news but its ramifications could be felt for years to come unless those in power admit that they made a massive rick and change the rule. You can’t try and erase ‘bad luck’ from racing.
From the angle I’m looking at it, the decision to declare that the Derby favourite wasn’t a runner even though it obviously was, appears to have come from the ‘Justice Payments’ culture of recent years. Decisions by some publicity seeking off course bookies to refund punters’ stakes if they were deemed to have been ‘unlucky’ have found their way into how racing is run.
Some off course bookies, apparently with very little self-awareness they have caused this even decided not to deduct the 25p Rule 4 from winning punters’ bets, adding fuel to the culture of expectation.
Social media is awash with entitled punters on a regular basis screaming the place down asking for ‘justice payments’ if they feel they’ve been unlucky. It’s only going to get worse now, there will be howls for the stewards to look into every well backed slowly away horse, chaos will ensue.
Gambling always was a rough and tough game, punters have endured agonising bad luck and enjoyed some right results when then they least expected it throughout the centuries betting has been a socially acceptable pastime in this country. It’s an activity that grown-up adults able to take the good and bad breaks in their stride and look forward to the next tussle.
There has been quite rightly a lot of effort into spotting problem gamblers in recent years. I have an idea that can whittle it down quite quickly, any social media account or direct contact to a bookmaker asking for a ‘justice payment’ should have their account closed immediately and shown the bloody door, start right there. Those sorts of people certainly don’t belong in the world of gambling.
Benvenuto Cellini was a runner in any race in the history of horseracing since the sport began. The end.
