Book Review – This novel relates the tale of twentysomething postman Andy Cooper and how a tragic event and a tangled personal life led to him betting shops and the wonderful characters that used to lurk there. I say used to as this is set in the final halcyon days of betting shops as centres of the community and something of a pleasant wander down memory lane for people of a certain age. The book follows the ups and downs, bets and pints of Andy as he struggles with relationship problems in equal measure battling to beat the bookies. There are plenty of twists and turns long the way and is unusual that you see the story through more than just Andy’s eyes. It’s a very enjoyable nostalgic tale which punters and horseracing fans will lap-up though sure to have a wider appeal too. Simon Nott
