Music legends Madness to perform at Newbury Racecourse in September
Newbury Racecourse announced today that British music legends Madness will be performing their special brand of entertainment after racing on Saturday, September 19, the second day of the Dubai Duty Free International Meeting.
In 2015 Madness are performing their biggest series of Outdoor Live Shows ever in the Grandslam Madness Tour. In the last few years they also delivered historic performances at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee concert, and at the Olympic Games closing ceremony cementing them as the nation’s favourite.
Madness previously appeared at Newbury Racecourse in 2009, entertaining a huge crowd in their own inimitable style.
Julian Thick, Newbury Racecourse CEO, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Madness back after a gap of six years on September 19. The band has enjoyed a real resurgence in recent times, and given the welcome they enjoyed in 2009, I’m sure it will be a great day combining the best of British music with the best of British racing.”
Madness frontman Suggs (aka Graham McPherson),added: “Racecourses are great. We’ve played a few in the past where they have been a few races and then you get a bit of Madness. It’s an unbeatable combination. I have a few flutters every now and then and have a bit of luck on the horses. I’m not a gambling man generally but I like it when you can see the steam coming out of the horses’ nostrils and that whole thing in front of you.”
Preceding the music is a top class eight-race card worth almost £300,000, featuring the Group Two Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes, one of the more important races of the season for two year olds. Racing is scheduled to start at 1.15pm with the last race at 4.35pm and the Madness concert commencing shortly after that.

About Newbury Racecourse
Newbury Racecourse held its first race in 1905 and has long been one of Britain’s leading tracks, staging up to 30 days of top class Jump and Flat racing annually, with at least one raceday in every month of the year.
The highlight of Newbury’s Jump racing programme is the Hennessy Gold Cup, a handicap chase over an extended three and a quarter miles, which usually takes place in late November, and is the longest-running commercial sporting sponsorship in the world. ‘The Hennessy’ is one of the most prestigious and sought after prizes in the sport and is the focal point of the three-day bet365 Hennessy Festival. The 2014 winner Many Clouds went on to win the 2015 Crabbie’s Grand National at Aintree.
On the Flat, Newbury’s high-quality programme includes the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes in May, with the Group One race over a mile worth £350,000. It has been won by many of the greats of the sport, including Frankel in 2012.
The racecourse is also a thriving events venue, hosting a huge range of activities including weddings, concerts, and conferences for 20 to 1,000 attendees for a wide spectrum of businesses and organisations in stunning surroundings. In addition, it runs a successful private nursery, providing a safe, happy and stimulating learning environment for many pre-school children.
Newbury is now home to a major housing development by David Wilson Homes, allowing people to live in a unique location alongside a world-renowned sporting venue, which also benefits from its own golf course in the centre of the racecourse and a Nuffield Health Club.
