Simon Says…..
‘Let me help you spread the word’
About Simon Nott.
I am a freelance music journalist who has been
actively writing since the early 1990s. My early
offerings were contributions to fanzines published
in various countries including Germany, Norway and
Japan. Some of my work for ‘Deathrow’, a UK fanzine,
was published in the Cherry Red book ‘Chronicles Of
Psychobilly’ in 2005.
In those days I also booked bands for The White
Ball, a music pub in my home town of Tiverton in
Devon. I also roadied for various underground bands
around Europe and learned a lot about the hardships,
problems and fun encountered by a band on the tour.
I started to write more seriously after returning
home from a year-long around the world trip in 2000
where I spent six months in Australia and dived
headlong into the Sydney pub/punk circuit, met some
great people and got involved.
Published Articles
I had my first national press in Big Cheese magazine
in 2002 after following the Californian leg of the
Warped Tour, writing a major feature on my return.
My first ‘cover’ story for Big Cheese was an
interview with The Alkaline Trio in 2003, I continue
to write for the magazine including features,
reviews, interviews and a bi-monthly column.
In 2006 I was at the Warped Tour again, this time
with Australian chart-toppers The Living End. I
wrote two separate pieces for Australian press, a
banner front page feature piece for national glossy
magazine ‘Blunt’ and full front page for Melbourne
street press luminary ‘Brag,’ both concentrating on
The Living End. I also wrote a feature on the Warped
Tour in general for Big Cheese.
I write sleeve notes on a freelance basis for
various record labels, most notably a series for
Anagram and a promo sleeve piece for PLY. I have
also written various biographies for bands for use
on their web pages.
What Simon Says…. can do for you.
I offer my services to bands, individuals and PR
companies on a professional level. I feel that there
is a massive opportunity to gain valuable publicity
in an area that is not always cultivated, local
press. There are around 1200 local free and paid-for
newspapers that often run alongside an estimated
1500 websites that serve their local communities in
the UK alone.
· My
strategy is to target them with a bespoke campaign
designed especially for the customer in question.
· Touring
bands supported along the whole route of their dates
with press releases and newspaper friendly
photographs, press targeted geographically for each
gig. In my experience many venues and ‘promoters’ do
very little in this respect, I will be aiming to
make the difference on behalf of the band. Follow-up
press can also be courted by inviting local
journalists to fill guest lists.
· I
am also be keen to undertake the same local press
campaign to bands whose existing PR companies who
would rather subcontract that task to me.
· A
similar approach is used for gaining local coverage
for CD or book launches as well as just publicity in
general. I will plan an individualised strategy for
each customer aiming to concentrate on their best
selling points aiming for maximum free exposure.
· Local
newspapers and websites will be the specialist
targets in all campaigns but I will also be firing
out a few ‘long-shot’ arrows in the direction of
local TV and Radio. National non-music press
opportunities will also be sought out and approached
if there is an angle, and there’s always an angle!
Due to the nature of the campaign there can be no
guarantee that all or any publications approached
will use the material we provide but past results
have indicated that a good many will.
I am very aware of the tight budgets that unsigned
touring bands run on and will be ensuring that my
fees are going to be affordable and hopefully
profitable for bands either the result of a door
deal, merchandise sales or just a great gig. Give me
a shout and we can get the ball rolling. I am not
limiting my work to just bands, all
entertainers/artists/writers who need publicity as
outlined above.
I look forward to hearing from you.
